Bauchinger, Johanna

Johanna BAUCHINGER, was born in Maxglan (which is now part of the city of Salzburg, but was then an independent community) on March 16, 1903 and was baptized in the parish of Mülln. She was the youngest of the five children of Franziska and Franz Bauchinger. The entire family had local citizenship rights in the Maxglan community and lived at 33 Maxglaner Hauptstraße. Johanna‘s mother died in 1917. Her father, who was a day laborer, remarried, but died in 1920.

Johanna was incapable of learning a trade so she was put to work as a maid. She was only 16 when she gave birth to a stillborn child. Johanna continued to live with her step-mother in Maxglan for a while, but then she became ill. At first she was taken in as a patient in a nursing home, but later she was admitted to the Salzburg State Asylum – though the date of her admission is not documented.

What is known is that Johanna BAUCHINGER was one of the 68 patients who were deported to the Hartheim killing center on April 16, 1941 where they were all murdered. As with all the other victims of the Nazi’s secret »T4«1 program to eliminate the severely handicapped from Germany and Austria, the death of this 38 year old woman was not recorded in the local police registration files. Johanna’s four siblings had already left Salzburg before the Nazi take over in 1938.

1 It was called the »T4« program because its central headquarters were located at Tiergartenstraße 4 in Berlin.
