Honeder, Georg

Georg HONEDER was born in Salzburg on April 22, 1880 and was baptized in the Catholic Church. He was the second of the six children of Katharina and Leopold Honeder. The family lived near the Salzburg main RR station at 39 Bahnhofstraße in Itzling. Leopold Honeder was in charge of a storeroom at the station until his death in 1910. His widow Katharina followed in 1928. Georg remaind unmarried and worked as a shoemaker’s assistant. When he became ill he was at first a patient at St. Anna’s hospital in the then independent community of Gnigl.

But starting in April 1925 Georg HONEDER became a patient at the Salzburg State Asylum. He was one of the 82 patients from there who were deported to the Hartheim killing center near Linz on April 17, 1941 where they were all murdered. As with all of the victims of the Nazis’ secret »T4«1 murder program the death of this 60 year old man was not entered in the Salzburg police registration files. His siblings all survived the terror years. Franz Zöchling, who was the son of Georg’s sister Maria and had been born in Itzling in 1923, was convicted of attempted desertion in 1944 and sent to serve in a punishment unit – after which he was reported missing.

The house where the Honeder family lived at 39 Bahnhofstrasse belonged to the brewery owners Sigmund and Richard Hatschek from Guggenthal (a short ways up on the Gaisberg east of the city). Under the Nazi regime the house was declared to be a »Jewish property« and taken over for the use of the German Reichsbahn.

1 It was called the »T4« program because its central headquarters were located at Tiergartenstraße 4 in Berlin.
