Mayr, Isabella

Isabella Mayr was born in Salzburg on July 27, 1903. She was an unmarried Catholic and worked as a sales clerk. She has a younger brother and lived with her widowed mother in the Linzer Gasse. The entire Mayr family had citizenship rights in the city of Salzburg under Austrian law.

Isabella Mayr had been a patient in the Salzburg State Mental Hospital since April 15, 1935 and on April 16, 1941 she was one of the 68 women and men shipped off to be murdered in the Hartheim killing center near Linz.

As with all the victims of the Nazi’s secret »T4«1 program the death of the 37 year old woman was not recorded in the police registration files of the city.

Isabella’s brother Alfred Mayr was born in Salzburg on November 13, 1906. He was a waiter and last lived in Salzburg-Gneis. He was deported to the Dachau concentration camp on June 17, 1938 and later transferred to the Mauthausen concentration camp – where his arrival seems not to have been recorded. In any case the police registration files in Salzburg indicate that the 31 year old died on September 9, 1938.

The mother of the two young murder victims died in Salzburg in 1959. The house where she lived at 35 Linzer Gasse belonged to a Catholic conservative family. One member of the family was the book dealer Josef Götzenberger, whose son was killed fighting on the Eastern Front against the Soviet Union.

He was severely mistreated by the Gestapo for making comments critical of the government and he died from his injuries in the Salzburg State Hospital on October 9, 1945.

1 The »T-4« program was named after the Tiergartenstraße 4 address of its headquarters in Berlin
