Maria Anna HEINY was born in Salzburg on October 30, 1895. She was the fourth of the five children of the Catholic couple Ottilie HEINY, née Antretter, and Anton HEINY.
Anton HEINY was a machinist by trade and was a foreman for the Imperial and Royal Austrian State Railway (which became the Austrian National Railway, ÖBB in 1920).

The family had local citizenship rights in Salzburg and lived at 24 Haydnstraße – which belonged to the widow and daughter of the last Minister President of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, Dr. Heinrich Lammasch.

Maria Anna HEINY studied singing and became a teacher. Women teachers were not allowed to keep their jobs if they married and like many other teachers she remained unmarried.
In January 1932 she was admitted as a patient to the Salzburg State Asylum and she was one of the 68 patients who were deported from the asylum to the Hartheim Castle killing center near Linz on April 16, 1941 – where they were all murdered.

As with all the other victims of the Nazis’ secret »T4«1 program, the death of this 45 year old woman was never recorded in the Salzburg police registration files.

By that point her parents and brothers Anton and Robert had already died. Her brother Georg was a building contractor who had lived abroad since the 1920s and only her married sister Ottilie still lived in Salzburg.

She died here at age 91.

1 It was called »T4« because its Berlin headquarters were located at Tiergartenstraße 4
Those mainly responsible for the murders of the sick in Salzburg: Dr. Friedrich Rainer as Reichsstatthalter, Dr. Oskar Hausner as head of the Gaufürsorgeamt, Dr. Leo Wolfer as head of the Landesheilanstalt, and Dr. Heinrich Wolfer as head of the hereditary biology department of the Landesheilanstalt (today the Christian Doppler Clinic).
